Holiday Recipe: Beer Bread

I love the ease of this recipe and how it can accompany the simplest of soups, hearty stews or even a more elegant entrée. The type and flavour of beer can have a profound impact in varying the results. One could use a non-alcoholic beer but would likely need to add a couple of teaspoons of rapid rising yeast. This recipe can be varied by the inclusion of grated cheeses as well as peppers, garlic, onion or other herbs from the garden.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour (sifted)

  • 3 tsp baking powder (omit if using self-rising flour)

  • 1 tsp salt (omit if using self-rising flour)

  • ¼ cup sugar

  • 1 can beer (12 oz)

  • 1/4 – 1/2 cup melted butter

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  2. Mix dry ingredients and beer
  3. Pour into a greased loaf pan
  4. Pour melted butter over the mixture
  5. Bake 1 hour, remove from pan and cool at least 15 minutes
