Over the last five years, resilience in the Canadian charitable sector has been repeatedly tested, forcing a sector-wide reassessment of traditional operating models.

Most recently, a major political shift in the United States, led and exemplified through the electoral victory of Donald Trump and the rise of the Make America Great Again movement, has inspired a “transvaluation of all values” in American politics. This shift has subsequently destabilized Canada’s political and economic landscape, impacting traditional corporate funding, major donors’ abilities to give and government funding priorities.

Despite the existential challenge faced by our charitable sector in meeting this historical moment, little scholarship has been devoted to exploring the status of our sector’s political resilience and how charities can prepare for and mitigate the impacts of political change.

To begin to address this gap, Global Philanthropic Canada embarks upon a focused dive into the practices and perceptions of charitable leaders from across the country. We explore their attitudes, confidence, questions and concerns about their organization’s ability to adapt to political change. Through analysis of their successes, best practices, challenges and lessons learned, we seek to answer one of the most pressing questions of the day: “Are we prepared?”

In a landscape where philanthropy often goes unrecognized, undervalued, and underfunded, one demographic stands out as the driving force behind the transformative change, needed in the sector: women.

In this paper, Global Philanthropic Canada explores the vital role of women in leading the philanthropic sector. We sat down with six remarkable female leaders from across Canada, each of whom bring their unique experience and insight to the roles they hold supporting a variety of causes – from the environment to social services, to culture and capacity building, to higher education, to professional associations, to the arts and culture, to gender and equity advocacy. The author of this paper is Dionne Malcolm, Associate with Global Philanthropic Canada.

The work of non profit organizations is transformational – from tangible grassroots impact in our communities, to national organizations driving for change at the highest levels.

But the philanthropic sector does not exist without critique. “The pandemic has emphasized the importance of the non profit sector’s work, but it has also laid bare the cracks in our operating environment”, said the 2022 Imagine Canada paper “Diversity Is Our Strength”.

As all industries grapple with their future in a post-pandemic landscape, so too does the philanthropic, considering broad-based topics like: funding challenges, the work required of us all to address equity, diversity and inclusion and how we create safe spaces for our teams and stakeholders, attracting and retaining the best talent, transparency within our operations, and adjusting course to be relevant and impactful in the future.

Using a variety of research methods, Global Philanthropic Canada set out to engage practitioners, leaders, and industry commentators within the philanthropic sector in Canada to learn more in our fourth report for the greater Canadian philanthropic sector entitled Defending Philanthropy: Understanding the impact, challenges and necessary evolution of the Canadian philanthropic sector, written by Global Philanthropic Canada’s Dionne Malcolm.

Global Philanthropic Inc. (Canada) is pleased to release the third in its series of Knowledge Creation Reports: A Rallying Framework for Impact and Change: The UN Sustainable Development Goals in the Canadian Fundraising Landscape by Dionne Malcolm and Igor Osipov.

Using a variety of research methods, Global set out to understand the role UNSDGs are playing within the Canadian fundraising landscape today, seven years after their creation. Through survey data, interviews and research from organizations across the country, varying in size, scope and mission, we are able to paint a qualitative and quantitative picture of how SDGs have begun to permeate the work in philanthropic fundraising. We also gathered case studies and quotes on how fundraisers and fundraising organizations can meaningfully use the SDGs to benefit the work they do now, and in the future.

Through our work on this report, we uncovered compelling rationale for the use of SDGs within the business of fundraising, such as: deepening our mission authenticity and organizational transparency, aligning more closely with the goals of private/corporate foundations (potentially increasing our partnership opportunities), using our investment strategies to exponentially increase the impact of our work, and decreasing our impact on our local environments through sustainability practices in events and marketing.

From the strategic view of senior leadership to the day-to-day operations of portfolio fundraisers, SDGs are becoming the lens through which we can align, promote, and inform the work we do in the Canadian philanthropic sector with stakeholders, funders, partners, and donors.

This report gives readers a snapshot of the role SDGs play today, and provides tangible examples and corresponding tips on how fundraisers and fundraising organizations are leveraging SDGs in their business practices, to help build capacity that will move the needle on these goals both globally, and close to home.

A REPORT TO THE CANADIAN NON-PROFIT SECTOR

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Postsecondary education in Canada in general, and particularly college level education, is experiencing a wave of changes. From the steady decline in public funding to the rising need of strategic alignment with employers, corporations, the rise of college-based applied research, and the rapidly evolving labour market, these changes take various forms.

This report looks at the crossroads of all aspects of fundraising practice. We examine different types of colleges and their engagement with fundraising practice. We compile views from the field with a goal to understand the most important and pressing issues for college fundraising in Canada in 2021 as we emerge from the COVID pandemic.

Connecting these changes with fundraising and philanthropy is crucial. This report responds to several questions: What is the current state of college fundraising in Canada? What are the gaps and best practices? Are members of college leadership involved in the fundraising process? What is the role of the Boards? What are the key roles in college fundraising?

The target audience for this report are people who engage in decisions of this nature daily: Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Directors, Officers and Board Members as well as individual and corporate donors and stakeholders.

The key challenges identified include structuring philanthropic strategy, both short and long-term; multiple colleges chasing the same dollar; and the pressing need to further change and develop both the culture and mindset of college leaders who continue to put fundraising priority into question.
